King's Cairn

Conceived as a grouping of buildings connected by glazed links and external colonnades, this single-storey house sits within a wider masterplan on a beautiful estate in coastal East Lothian.

The house is essentially a series of blocks — arranged to form a courtyard — with a primary block formed of timber, and defined by a pitched roof and open volume within. This social space at the heart of the building connects to secondary stone bedroom block, and other outbuildings via minimal glazed links and covered external walkways. A subdued palette of materials is employed, comprised internally of oiled oak timber linings, and externally a combination of natural stonework, black painted timber, and black standing seam zinc. Privacy to the external courtyard areas is provided by extensive planting, enabling the house to sit comfortably and quietly amid the tall trees and seafront views of this attractive site.

The overall result is a subtle and understated contemporary home — greater than the sum of its parts.

We are increasingly asked to complete the interior design of a building. For us, this is an obvious step to ensuring the space blends with the landscape, from the inside out. Selecting complimentary materials, fixtures and furnishings that ebb and flow throughout the building is considered not as an afterthought, but as an integral part of the design process.
