Nochty Studio
Info

Simplicity is at the heart of this small building, sitting high on the side of a glen within the Cairngorms National Park in Aberdeenshire, and designed by Brown & Brown for our own practice.

Clad in darkened pine under a corrugated metal roof the building is quiet and unassuming. Looking to the river below, overlooked by Glen Nochty from above, and with a roofline following the form of the land, the building balances perfectly in its surroundings.

Internally the area is comprised of a primary studio space designed to connect visually with the outside by way of floor to ceiling glazing. Deliberately simple and honest in nature, the exposed timber roof gives the space character and rhythm, naturally leading the eye through.

Creating a highly insulated envelope around the structure allows the wood-burning stove to be the only source of heating — minimising energy use and maximising space. Internally the fire is a natural focal point, but placing it by the expansive windows ensures the eye is always drawn to the panoramic view behind.

Nochty Studio is conceived as a strong and contemporary form within the landscape and is perfectly suited to creative design work, providing daily inspiration.
