Spyon Cop

A simple, refined house of timber and glass designed to sit quietly within the landscape at the Eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, in Aberdeenshire.

This modern, understated retreat is a perfect place to step away from the everyday, and relax with a glass of something warming by the crackling fire — set against a backdrop of magnificent mountains beyond.

Externally the building is formed of a skin of blackened timber, glass, and corten steel, which has been carefully selected to endure the harsh climate of the hillside, as well as being robust enough to withstand whatever rural life has to offer. There is also a wild grass roof installed which helps cocoon the structure into the landscape. Internally, the space is simple, conceived as a large social area with double height ceiling, around which a series of smaller spaces of a more tactile nature, are orientated to form the bedrooms.

The materials palette used throughout is modest and reductive, ensuring that the spaces are quiet, considered, and of the quality demanded by such a fantastic location. The result is an understated piece of contemporary architecture which sits comfortably in this setting of outstanding natural beauty.

We are increasingly asked to complete the interior design of a building. For us, this is an obvious step to ensuring the space blends with the landscape, from the inside out. Selecting complimentary materials, fixtures and furnishings that ebb and flow throughout the building is considered not as an afterthought, but as an integral part of the design process.
