Awards Successes for Dalbrack

Awards Successes for Dalbrack

The peculiar month of March 2020 has come and gone, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge how pleased we were at recent successes for our Dalbrack cottage project at the recent Aberdeen Society of Architects Annual Dinner and Design Awards.

We picked up the award for Innovative Use of Timber - in association with Wood for Good & Forestry Scotland - for this project, which also earned a High Commendation in the Sustainability category.

Among the judges comments, we were particularly buoyed by their recognition of the relationship between ourselves and the client - a key aspect of our approach to architectural practice - and also how the new Dalbrack cottage makes use of timber linings that can be removed in the case of further flooding, which was a significant factor in the original project brief.

Client comments:

“Brown & Brown could not have been more helpful in realising ambitions for our small house in Ballater, which had to be rebuilt following the flooding in December 2015.

Their design for a small site is visually pleasing (both inside and out), and has made us a convenient and cosy living space. They responded quickly and clearly, explained what was happening, and managed the process with great professionalism and good humour.”

Further judges comments:

“The new design has carefully been designed to a high degree of detail. The project by its nature is economic but it packs in a lot of pleasing architecture, at every turn you see the architects touch down to the detail of the space saving sliding interior doors that are concealed in the walls”

“Externally the timber is carefully detailed and the composition is reminiscent of abstracted back garden architecture. A particularly successful detail is the timbered entrance space where the client wanted a space to sit out of the weather and talk to his near neighbour across the fence.”

“The result is a clean and contemporary house, which sits comfortably within a sensitive context.”
